Fangirling about Alice Oseman

Solitarie

In case you’re wondering, this is not a love story.
My name is Tori Spring. I like to sleep and I like to blog. Last year – before all that stuff with Charlie and before I had to face the harsh realities of A-Levels and university applications and the fact that one day I really will have to start talking to people – I had friends. Things were very different, I guess, but that’s all over now.
Now there’s Solitaire. And Michael Holden.
I don’t know what Solitaire are trying to do, and I don’t care about Michael Holden.
I really don’t.

This Christmas my father thought it would be nice to give me some books that are not on my tbr … AND GUYS I’M SO THANKFUL FOR THIS! Otherwise I’d probaly never discoverd Alice Oseman — what would have been such a pitty! We always throw a little Christmas party (at the 22th December) with friends but unfortunaly all my friends couldn’t make it so I was like super bored. And because I have the loveliest dad (no offense) he gave me Solitarie by Alice Oseman as an early gift. Well, I have to say that when I started to read I actually wasn’t that amazed. I thought something like: “Yeah another over dramatic teenie book. Exactly what I needed” maybe I also thought “wow, the writers these day seem to can’t get enough of sad teenies” don’t get me wrong, I think it’s really important and right that there’re more books about teenies with depression, aniexty or who simpely struggle with their mental health (just like i do). But I also really don’t like the idea of making mental illnes a trend. It should be seen and accepted by the socitey, by friends, by us. But with these tons of YA you don’t do that. What you’re actually doing is romanticizing and trivialize the struggle. BUT THIS BOOK IS MORE. It’s not about a broken teenager who needs to be saved by some other teenie with a cheesy lovestory and golden sunsets. Yes, Tori is sad. Yes, Michael is sad (or angry? I think angry fits better). And that’s okay. BECAUSE IT’S FUCKING OKAY TO BE NOT OKAY. And that’s the point Alice completly understands. She’s not one of these greedy YA writers who think they can make good money with other peoples sadnes. She sees that Tori is sad and she accepts it. She helps her with sending her a good friends who also understands it. And so, at the end, they all help each other with just UNDERSTANDING. They aren’t suddenly super happy and dance and whatever but now they have someone who gets them.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand there’s another thing I completly love about this book. Tori has a brother who has eating disorders. Because boys can have them as well. get over it. Well, don’t get over it. Help them!

I was born for this

For Angel Rahimi, life is only about one thing: The Ark – a pop-rock trio of teenage boys who are currently taking the world by storm. Being part of The Ark’s fandom has given her everything – her friendships, her dreams, her place in the world.
Jimmy Kaga-Ricci owes everything to The Ark too. He’s their frontman – and playing in a band is all he’s ever dreamed of doing. It’s just a shame that recently everything in his life seems to have turned into a bit of a nightmare.

okay. This book is probaly one of the best. It’s creative, thrilling, heard warming, queer and AMAZING WRITTEN! I’m a book blogger (surprise surprise) so it’s kind of naturall that I’m a fangirl of storys. But I’ve never been that much into a book as angel is into the ark. And I think, that’s a good thing. It’s not healthy to care more about some people you don’t even know than aboutt yourself. (that’s exactly the thing this lovely book teached me :). And this moment, when Angel realizes that is heartbreaking. Actually it’s less a moment than a process but believe me, it will break your heart.

+++ SPOILER ALERT +++
after this cute photo, you will immediately be confronted with huge spoilers

hey! I promised you spoilers, here they are: So you in this book you won’t find a lovestory between the adorable maincharacters what I think is amazing. Then because of that everything is open

Even if Angel said no when that dickhead Mac asked her if she was gay she really
could be aro/ace
or could come together with Bliss or Juliet
or there’s somone mysterious we’ll never meet 🙁

the same goes for Jimmy (who’s trans and gay what is valid as fuck)
he could be aro as well
he finally could come together with Lister (who has a BIG crush on him)
or he also finds soemone completly else …

lol I’m probaly worse then the Ark fangirls but who cares?

Sooooo this was a long article but I wanted to give something back to this author who gave me three (I’ll tell you about radio silence another time) of my absolute favourite books!
